Choose a style that works with your windows and doors

There are six main styles of window shutters. If you’re not sure which one will work best for your home, check out the following: full height shutters, tier-on-tier shutters, shaped shutters, cafe style shutters, solid shutters, and tracked/sliding shutters.

Full Height Shutters

Full height shutters are desired for their classic design and versatility. They’re perfect for almost any window type but are best for tall windows. The central dividing rail adds support and style! While the louvers can be adjusted separately to fit your needs. However, if your window is excessively large, we recommend a tracked system instead.

Tier on Tier Shutters

Tier-on-tier shutters are extremely useful because the top and bottom tiers open separately, letting you control the light and fresh air in your space. The bottom/top tier can stay closed for partial light control or privacy while the other is open. Each set of shutters has two panels designed to fit the natural breaks in your window.

Shaped Shutters

Custom made shutters are the perfect solution when it comes to covering irregular or unique window shapes. They come in many shapes and sizes, like triangular, curved, arched, porthole, half-circle, oval, octagon, angled, sunburst, trapezoid, and elongated. They are often appropriate for windows located in the gable ends, roofs, attics, and eaves.

Cafe Style Shutters

Cafe-style shutters are the perfect choice for homes whose windows are on the ground floor and need a balanced level of privacy and light protection. These window treatments are designed to cover only the bottom section of a window and are popular for first-floor rooms or those with a lovely garden or lake view.

Solid Shutters

For occupants, solid shutters can be an incredible investment. They can create a blackout effect, block noise, and offer insulation. The best part is that they are hinged vertically, meaning that they are closed or openable.

Tracked / Sliding Shutters

Tracked or sliding shutters are perfect for large windows or doors. The bottom track or sliding mechanism offers stability and smooth operation of the panels. The popular option is bi-fold shutters, which require space as the panels stack back and forth across the window or opening. This type of shutter can be made secure with magnet plates.

Bypass shutters are set in gliders that allow them to move in front of or behind each other. They come in handy for covering openings with a sliding mechanism. And can be opened to cover half the window, or they can be closed to cover the whole thing.

Consider options for your shutter style and design

Mid-rails are offered for both wood and poly, with poly needing a mid-rail at 78 inches and wood needing a mid-rail at 100 inches. A mid-rail allows you to tilt louvers at the top of the shutter open and close separately from the bottom. The adjustable option is very popular because it gives you the ability to let light in while still being private.

Smaller and larger louver sizes vary, and each has its advantage. For example, 2 1/2″ louvers can give a home a more closed-in feeling and allow less light into the space. For better visibility and more light, 3 1/2″, 4 1/2″, and sometimes 5 1/2″ louver sizes are used. It’s all personal preference, so you can’t go wrong.

There are two options on mounting: the outside mount or the inside mount. We recommend an inside mount when you have decorative trim on your windows. Shutters will attach directly to the window frame with hinges or a small wooden frame on the bottom of the shutter. It’s sometimes called an “L” frame. If not, the outside mount frames give your windows a finished look. The L frame sits outside the window opening, and the Z frame overlaps the corners of the window opening.

Hidden tilt refers to the rod that controls the louvers, whether it is placed on the back or front of the shutter. The traditional placement is on the front center of the shutter, but the hidden tilt is an upcharge and provides a cleaner and more modern feel. It’s all up to you!

Choose a color scheme that matches your interior decor

One of the most important decisions you’ll make when it comes to your home is the color of your shutters. The right colors will help you elevate your space. To choose, consider using white as your interior plantation shutters. White is a versatile color, so it’s never boring. Plus, you can always change the color if it becomes unsatisfying. You can even change to a new color scheme with a simple shutter color change!
